Concerts in Schools
Thanks to funding from the Kings Daughter’s Benevolent Association, the NSA is able to present a specially-designed small ensemble program to area elementary schools each spring. During the school day, they get to hear a sample of each featured instrument and learn about basic music concepts. Often teachers create curriculum parallels leading up to the event so students find the pieces even more relevant to their education.
In 2011…
Students were treated to the tale of Till Eulenspiegel, based on Strauss’ tone poem and arranged by Franz Hasenöhrl as a frolic for 5 instruments. This celebrated music recounts the adventures of the medieval “merry prankster” Till Eulenspiegel. Students were delighted by this lighthearted fairy tale of rebellion while learning a little about music appreciation.
In 2010…
NSO Principal Trumpet Richard Watson led a brass quintet. The program began with the musicians talking about music, encouraging the children to participate by asking questions, discussing their particular instruments followed by a musical performance. The expressions on the children’s faces as they participated and volunteered information on their own musical experiences brought home how effective the “Concerts in the Schools” program continues to be.
